Futon frames are measured by the size of their mattresses (the dimensions of the futon would depend on the frame style and the thickness of the arms). There are two types of futon frames, bi-fold futons and futon loungers, but all of them fall into one of the following size groups:
- Chair
- Twin
- Full
- Queen
There are no King size futons or futon mattresses. They would be extremely hard to convert.
While futon mattresses have the same dimensions as conventional mattresses, they come in split sizes for split bodies and loungers.
- Chair futon body measures 28" x 54" when opened to a bed position. It can be used with an optional ottoman that uses a mattress of 28" x 21".
- Twin futon bodies come in 2 styles: Twin Split and Twin Lounger. Both open to a Twin size bed:
- Twin Split body measures 39" x 54" when open. If you want to use it as a bed, you will need an optional stand-alone ottoman and a matching Twin Ottoman mattress (39" x 21").
- Twin Lounger body is similar to Twin Split but includes the ottoman part that slides into the frame. You will need a Twin Ottoman mattress if you want to use the Twin Lounger as a bed.
- Full futon bodies come in 3 different styles: Full, Loveseat, and Full Lounger. All of them open to a Full size bed:
- Full size body measures 75" x 54" when open. It uses a regular Full size futon mattress.
- Loveseat (Full Split) body measures 54" x 54" when open. If you want to use it as a bed, you will need an optional stand-alone ottoman and a matching Love Ottoman mattress (54" x 21").
- Full Lounger body is similar to Loveseat but includes the ottoman part that slides into the frame. You will need a Love Ottoman mattress if you want to use the Full Lounger as a bed.
- Queen futon bodies come in 3 different styles as well: Queen, Queen Split, and Queen Lounger. All of them open to a Queen size bed:
- Queen size body measures 80" x 60" when open. It uses a regular Queen size futon mattress.
- Queen Split body measures 60" x 54" when open. If you want to use it as a bed, you will need an optional stand-alone ottoman and a matching Queen Ottoman mattress (60" x 26").
- Queen Lounger body is similar to Queen Split but includes the ottoman part that slides into the frame. You will need a Queen Ottoman mattress if you want to use the Queen Lounger as a bed.
How to Choose
If you need a small futon, consider Chair or Twin sizes. If you want to use as little floor space as possible, but have an additional sleeping option for occasional guests, consider Split/Lounger styles (Loveseat, Full Lounger, Queen Split or Queen Lounger). If you want to have more seating space, consider a regular Full or Queen size futon.
